The reservoir - Canal du midi

Réservoir
Revel

Details of the activity

Linking the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean ... a dream carried since Antiquity. Pierre-Paul Riquet, a Languedoc notable from the 17th century did it! Along with the Palace of Versailles, the Canal du Midi is the most important monumental achievement of the reign of Louis XIV. The Canal du Midi has its source in the Montagne Noire. To the water collected from the Alzeau river is added that of a dozen small streams. Transported by a clever system of channels, it flows into a basin retained by a dam, known today under the name of St Ferréol, but which in the past was called the RESERVOIR. The dam, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the keystone of the canal's power system.
